In contemporary cultural news, anyone in the vicinity of Worcester, Massachusetts, should plan on visiting the College of the Holy Cross on Wednesday, February 4th. Cristina Pato, Holy Cross’s 2014 artist-in-residence, will be debuting a new project, inspired by the Camino and her Galician background, entitled “The Camino Experience: Making the Way.” Described as a spiritual, musical journey, the performance guides audience members along the Camino through music, images, and the spoken word, incorporating reflections on first-hand pilgrim accounts and specific moments of trials and triumphs. The project is a collaboration between the College Choir, the theater department, and the Cantor Art Gallery. In Pato’s words, “I cannot think of a better home than Holy Cross to nurture the beginning of this new work inspired by the power of sharing and making life decisions to start your own personal journey using the way to Santiago de Compostela as a leitmotif.”

Cristina Pato, a Spanish artist from Galicia, is an acclaimed bagpiper, pianist, and composer. Her work ranges from Galician popular music to classical and jazz styles, and she has toured throughout Europe, the U.S., Africa, and Asia. The first female gaita (Galician bagpipe) player to release a solo album, she is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and has collaborated with Arturo O’Farril, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Osvaldo Golijov, the World Orchestra, and Paquito D’Rivera. She is also the founder and artistic director of Galician Connection, an annual world music forum in Galicia.

The performance, to be held at 7pm in Mary Chapel, will kick off Holy Cross’s Arts Transcending Borders (ATB) program, an effort to enhance campus life through diverse fine and performing arts events, transcending cultural, geographic, and disciplinary boundaries. All of ATB’s events are free and publicly accessible unless otherwise noted.
